Possibly the Windows keyboard language shortcut

I haven't had this problem specifically with Notes, but had the same thing with other software a while ago.
The problem in my case was caused by the Windows default shortcut for switching between input languages.
The shortcut was Ctrl-Space, and there was a bug in Windows Vista and XP that made it impossible to change that shortcut unless alternate input languages were uninstalled.

I'm not currently using the Vista PC on which I had the problem, but here's where you can check the shortcut in Windows 7:
Go to Control Panel -> Region and Language -> Keyboards and Languages, and click the "Change keyboards" button.
Go to the "Advanced Key Settings" tab. There's a keyboard shortcut defined for switching between input languages.
